10 months agoIMPORTANT NOTICE: Submission Policy! It exists!
Okay guys, so NO. This is not a rant journal. And it'd also be great if you didn't go like “Oh no, another moderator journal about rules at MB!! -flees the country-”.
I am actually going to try my best to make this easy to read, and most importantly, I will try to express my concerns in two different points of view: as a moderator, and simply as another member and artist of the community.
So, the story starts like this. One fine day you decide to join MangaBullet. You make your account, log in, and you decide to start posting your art. A couple of days later you come to MangaBullet and realize, some of your artwork has ben deleted! OH NOES!!
You start asking yourself “WAI!?! WAI! WHY WAS MY ARTWORK DELETED!! -sob sob/wrist/wrist-” You scream! You kick! You curse! You make rant journals! You cast a spell upon MangaBullet! You turn all your friends against it! You threaten to leave! And oh no, all your friends are leaving too because of this brutal act of unfairness!
Well..what? What? You don't know why your art got deleted..hmm? Oh, oh? What did you say..? Ohh...
You didn't read....the SUBMISSION POLICY!
Ooh..so that makes a lot of sense. You don't even know if the art you posted was allowed in the site. You don't even know if by posting it you were breaking the rules! Ooooh....
I've lost count of the times I've been browsing the gallery, and I read "Are we allowed to post this on MangaBullet?" in the artists' comments. So instead of going ahead and checking out the "What types of content are not permitted? " in the Submission Policy, you post it. After that, you wait to see if it gets deleted or not............and then you throw a fit over it!!
Tsk..tsk..tsk. That's not how things are supposed to be. Let's be honest kids, when we first join a site, we just quickly check the "I have read and agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy" so we can get access faster. Yes, I know, we all do it. Everywhere, all the time. But! Don't you at some point read the submission policy? You don't read the rules of the site?
Sure, "Rules are meant to be e broken". But you break them, and then we take care of it. That you break the rules doesn't mean they don't exist and that we won't enforce them. What I'm saying is, if you're not sure if your submission is allowed in MangaBullet or not, maybe try to read the Submission Policy first instead of posting it and wait to see what happens?
Luckily for all of us, the Submission Policy at MangaBullet is quite simple. It won't take you ages to read, and it isn't an endless bunch of paragrahs stuck together that you finish scrolling down to after 5 minutes. It's a little, simple set of rules that we'd much appreciate if you tried to abide by.
So, for those of you who are still too lazy to go look for the Submission Policy yourself and give it a read., even though I gave a link to it earlier, I shall quote it here. Here's what it says:
_____________________
What types of content are permitted?
MangaBullet allows artists to freely express themselves, with few restrictions placed on what is unacceptable. However, because a portion of our userbase is below the legal age defined by their country of residence, you must make sure any mature content is clearly marked as such, using the mature content option of the submission process.
Items that qualify as mature content include the following:
* Erotic or suggestive imagery.
* Exposure of uncensored breasts, buttocks, or genitalia.
* Excessive violence or gore.
Please be considerate; many users browse from public places, such as schools or work. Any content that falls into an above category or grey area without being marked will be subject to deletion.
What types of content are not permitted?
Artwork created by a party that you do not have the permission of to publish is not permitted. This includes any of the following:
* Using, in full or in portions, the artwork (that you do not have permission to re-publish) in your own piece.
* Modifying the original artwork, such as by colouring/re-colouring or applying filters.
* Tracing (even when including original elements; this includes vector tracing).
* Intentional photography of others' artwork without the owner's permission.
Exceptions:
* Logos which are not the picture's main focus.
* Unintentional photography of artwork (such as a photo of yourself in front of an artist's table, art gallery, poster, sign, or statue, or wearing a piece of clothing with an illustration or design).
* Anything that the owner has given you permission to re-publish.

O3o;; Now...that doesn't sound very complicated does it?...In fact, I thinks' pretty simple. To generalize things and make it even easier, I could even simplify it into 3 basic things:
1.Censor mature content.
2.Don't post illegal stuff.
3.Post your original work. Things YOU did.
Now, there is another issue I'd like to discuss and that is Copied/Eyeballed artwork. As much as I'd like to just remove all those submissions from MB, I can't, since they are accepted to a certain point. In a very personal opinion, I see tracing and copying/eyeballing not much different, seeing it from a copyright infringement point of view. In both cases you're reproducing or duplicating artwork that isn't yours. But that's my personal point of view, okay? In any case, artwork like this is accepted in MangaBullet for the most part, but with certain limits.
Let's be realistic, we all have copied or eyeballed another person's artwork at some point. Especially when we are learning. It's part of human nature and behaviour to learn from copying and mimicking others. But guess what people? It is also part of our human nature to LEARN AT SOME POINT. So, what I'm trying to say is: If you're new to the whole drawing thing, and you're still learning, sure, you will post some copied/eyeballed work into your gallery, but PLEASE TRY TO POST SOME ORIGINAL WORK AS WELL.
There is a key to submitting copied/eyeballed artwork with less risk of it being deleted, but people don't realize it. It's a matter of simple logic, and hardly anybody does this. Wanna know what it is?
GIVING A LINK TO YOUR REFERENCE PICTURE.
This simple fact, will make the risk of your picture getting deleted decrease noticeably. Please keep in mind, I said DECREASE, this doesn't mean your submission stops being subject to deletion. Even if you post a reference, gallery moderators can still consider it infringement and remove it from your gallery. Whether your submission stays in your gallery or not, is ultimately up to the staff's judgement.
And I just want to make something very clear before I finish this journal entry and move on to the next one. I'm not attacking anyone, this isn't for anyone in specific. It is FOR EVERYONE. We are a community, and EVERYBODY should abide by these rules and guidelines. That way, it'll be better for all of us. I say this because there are a lot of people who love to take things personally and take offense in these kinds of journals. If you took offense with this journal, then it means you are one of the people who do these kids of things, and so, I'm happy you read it.
Thanks a lot for reading.
If you agree, please prop this journal, so that the people who don't watch me can read it as well.

I thought you said you were gonna make that easy to read, Gafu! @ x @; -wobbles-
But it's worth it, you think this kind of thing would be common sense to artists- neh? I hope people get better about submission policies. O' w 'O

I give kudos for giving the submission policy needed attention.
Thanks man. I wrote some other things and I'd like to discuss them with you, since to be honest, I can never catch the other gallery mods on.
I don't see why not. Send a PM whenever.
Damn, people are so stupid D: MB's submission policy is pretty much just common sense.
I know right? lol. still, I'm not the first one to make journals about this and it keeps happening.
You tell 'em, pandakat! That'll learn 'em to read! >8D
srsly, why people? Why?

Agree. MB's TOU is easy to follow.
About eyeballing... I din't like it, but I wouldn't report an eyeballed piece if it had a link or some sort of credit to the original.

The topic about eyeballed submissions is a little bit complicated because there are a lot of variables. I don't like it at all, but it's acceptable in some cases. Though there are some in which the picture is almost identical to the original, to the point to where it looks like a trace. That way, even if it had a link, it would still consider it's deletion. Thanks for reading my long ass journal!
At least I read the submission policy when I get unsure what's okay to post =__=; like... I know before reading posting stuff where my OCs are fully clothed and just standing around in a nothingness is allowed. but I read the policy several times, just to make sure I don't misunderstand anything, when I upload stuff I believe should be mature content.
I'm not saying people SHOULD do that, but at least it works.
Also... People, please read the submission policy at least briefly the first time you post. I'm often at school and any porn or pervy stuff will get me banned from the schools servers. It's a major problem for me if that happens. I have a month left for graduation and I need to be able to access the comps.
Now, this is the second journal I've read about this and I think this is very important. Not only because I am, like a lot of otehr people, browsing the site from school, but also because I'm not very happy to see it... =____=;
I had more to write, but my knees started to hurt so I lost my thoughts, lol...

Oh, please do! lolol you'd pop my 'getting my art deleted for unknown infringement' cherry
THANK you for pointing this out. I dunno how many times I've seen people ranting in their journals about why their stuff was deleted when they said they "followed the rules". I mean, it's like making a demotivator. The picture you use is something you should've done yourself or gotten permission to use cause otherwise it's art theft and all that... *would know for making than mistake on other sites*
I can't draw to save my life, but I'd rather draw something God awful that TRACE or COPY or something like that...

Yeah, I mean..If I could I would personally just DELETE every copied and eyeballed artwork there is on MB. Because in my eyes, it's just as bad as tracing. But it's generally accepted to a certain point, so there's not much I can do about it. Especially when you're still learning but oh well.
Yeah, I feel relatively the same. I mean, I used to have master sketching skillz D: I saw something, I could sketch it for you. Like my picture of Haku from Spirited Away. I froze my movie just so I could sketch him and everyone says I traced him D: Not my fault I could sketch something just from seeing it! Granted it takes me forever to get it done... and now, since I haven't been sketching in AGES, I've prolly lost that little ability. The main reason I quit was cause someone said that because I traced, I wasn't fit enough to be an artist
Still haven't forgotten that.
I don't regard tracing as a learning tool. It teaches you art theft. That's about it.

I always make sure that the stock-image-holder-person will let me use their image (almost always a photo) as reference for my drawings, and I post a link
tbh, I don't really understand why some people will post ONLY traced/eyeballed art (I have seen these people on dA, haven't seen em on MB yet D: ), its like... you should be able to draw on your own now, please draw something original? pretty please?
^^;
