I AGREE SO MUCH, that it fits his personality! I think it's that Near's personality and the way he behaves is so gender-neutral that, for one, the change of bits and bobs wouldn't effect his personality... and for another, I think that it makes Mello's intense one-sided rivalry and the fact that Ohba and Obata confirmed that it WAS one-sided, since Near LIKED Mello, even more engaging and a different dimension of cute! XD Some other people have said that, if Near were a girl, it would change the very subtly Mello-obsessed bits of his personality from coming-off as vaguely creepy to coming-off very cute. [I think it's cute no matter what, but y'know |D]

As far as that, the US supreme court ruled that fictional depiction of minors, even PHOTO-REALISTIC ONES, are legal as long as it's a fictional rendering. |D Still most US websites run themselves as if the supreme court never made that ruling and shota/loli is evil;;;

And, thank goodness! I hope those laws in the UK and (recently the Philippines I believe) eventually get overturned and soon! I heard that a few comic book artists in the UK are looking to challenge that rule with some compilation work or something. That would be kickin' rad.
